Tesla Electric Semi Truck Debuts for Real

Class 8 trucks continue to become more fuel efficient, allowing owner-operators to use less fuel than in past decades. Electric-car maker Tesla takes this a step further with its electric semi tractor.

Here’s what you need to know about this new technology advancement:

  • Tesla finally unveils production-ready models of its Class 8 battery-electric semi tractor it built for PepsiCo after 5 years of skepticism and waiting.
  • Test runs confirmed that the electric semi can haul 82,000 pounds in a 500-mile, single-charge run with the battery starting at 97% and ending at 4%.
  • Only nine stations are needed to build the new truck, which features a sleek, simple design – a defining concept for this first-generation production semi.
  • The smaller size is a new concept for the North American Class 8 market with both the motor and battery pack smaller than other electric semi models.
  • Past Tesla comments indicate the company will produce 50,000 battery-electric trucks in 2024.
